"70% of my body is made of movies"
-Hideo Kojima
I'll try to keep it spoiler-free. Don't excpect any competent reviews.
I watch a lot of more movies than this but here's the ones I have something to say about.
Candyman (1992)
★★★★☆
Watched: 15/11/2024
Genres: Horror
Director: Bernard Rose
Runtime: 100 mins
Language: English
The Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster’s myth.
R.I.P. Tony Todd
If someone tells you to say a name in front of a mirror five times to summon a man with a hook-hand,
you probably shouldn't do that.
Not a lot of actual candy, life just kinda sucks.
I recommend reading into some of the behind the scenes facts. Those bees were real!
Funny Games (1997)
★★★★✭
Watched: 28/10/2024
Genres: Horror
Director: Michael Haneke
Runtime: 109 mins
Language: German
Two psychotic young men take a family hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic “games” with one another for their own amusement.
NEVER LET AUSTRIAN BOYS BORROW YOUR EGGS
Honestly, them being Austrian made this much scarier for me. Being from north Germany, hearing Digga/Dicker being used as an insult (instead of a term of endearment) still makes me wonder.
The boys' acting was great. Never felt more discomfort and second-hand embarrassment than in the egg scene. Horrible. Oh God. Please, Stop Dropping The Eggs.
The American remake wasn't bad but none of the changes added anything interesting. They ruined Paul's look by making the shorts longer. If you're too lazy to read subtitles, go for it but I will judge you.
Interstellar (2014)
★★★★✭
Watched: 09/11/2024
Genres: Sci-Fi, Drama
Director: Christopher Nolan
Runtime: 169 mins
Language: English
The adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.
Most of my time watching this I spent being horrified of space instead of getting into the emotional parts of the plot.
I think after seeing that big wave, I was gone (mentally). Black holes have always been a childhood fear of mine. Like quicksand, but I don't see many movies about quicksand.
Great movie. Bought a book with the storyboards.
Planet of the Apes (1968)
★★★★✭
Watched: 23/11/2024
Genres: Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi
Director: Franklin J. Schaffner
Runtime: 112 mins
Language: English
Astronaut Taylor crash lands on a distant planet ruled by apes who use a primitive race of humans for experimentation and sport. Soon Taylor finds himself among the hunted, his life in the hands of a benevolent chimpanzee scientist.
Didn't expect that I would like the movie this much. I'm not a huge fan of monkeys apes.
I got nothing to complain about really. It's great. The ending is the kind that you never forget.
Started a list of my favourite movie endings after watching this.
(I overcame my fear of apes for a moment after watching the behind the scenes of how the make-up/prosthetics are applied.)
TÁR (2022)
★★★★☆
Watched: 09/09/2024
Genres: Music, Drama
Director: Todd Field
Runtime: 158 mins
Language: English, German
As celebrated conductor Lydia Tár starts rehearsals for a career-defining symphony, the consequences of her past choices begin
to echo in the present.
My first look into the world of conducting and I am greatly overwhelmed.
Wonderful acting (Cate Blanchett) and characterization; it almost feels like watching a biopic of a real person.
Brought up some interesting topics; Death of the Author kind of stuff.
That was an ending that I did not expect. There's a real whimsical feeling to that.
The Substance (2024)
★★★☆☆
Watched: 25/11/2024
Genres: Horror, Drama
Director: Coralie Fargeat
Runtime: 141 mins
Language: English
A fading celebrity decides to use a black market drug, a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.
This was just kind of annoying.
It's a pretty easily understandable message about body image/dysmorphia and society.
The length of movies isn't something I like to complain about but this is just repeating the same thing slowly.
And girl just stop looking at that fucking billboard. If she didn't live with a window view of that thing, this would've been over after like the first body swap.
Also confused about the fact that these people are still recording like aerobic sport shows? or are those music/dance videos? I genuinly thought it was the 80s til I realized they have flat screen TVs and cell phones.
The acting and practical effects were good though that's the only positive thoughts I have.
The Wicker Man (1973)
★★★★★
Watched: 18/08/2024
Genres: Horror
Director: Robin Hardy
Runtime: 93 mins
Language: English
Police sergeant Neil Howie is called to an island village in search of a missing girl whom the locals claim never existed. Stranger still, however, are the rituals that take place there.
The usual folk horror that I love BUT also a great musical. The day after I watched the movie I ordered the soundtrack on vinyl.
Personally, if I was that cop I'd just give up and play along when they started dancing and singing around the maypole.
